Day 1 (by land)
In the penguins’s path
09:00 hrs.
Our adventure will begin by private transfer from Puerto Varas (or Puerto
Montt) to Chiloé Island. At mid-day we will lunch in a typical restaurant
in the city of Ancud and visit other places reflecting the history and
culture of Chiloe . In the afternoon we will visit penguin colony, enjoying
a place of incredible beauty. Later we will journey to a family farm
to enjoy a country dinner and learn about the activities of a Chilote
farm.
Day 2 (by land)
Discovering the history of Chiloe
After an exquisite country breakfast we will travel by land to villages
like Quemchi and Colo to see one of the most beautiful of the 16 churches
in Chiloe designated by UNESCO as world heritage sites. We will continue
on to San Juan visiting traditional handmade boat builders and also
the oldest church of the 16 UNESCO churches. In the afternoon we will
visit a beautiful water fall and arrive at Tenaún, to relax and enjoy
an appetizing dinner in a beautiful site.
Day 3 (by land)
Knowing Chilotes’s customs and their national park …
From Tenaún we will go to Dalcahue, visiting the most traditional Chiloé
handicraft center and continuing on to Castro, the main city of the
island. In Castro, we will visit several interesting places, including
the largest of the World Heritage churches. In the afternoon we will
continue to the Chiloé National Park for a beautiful and long walk,
filled with beautiful vistas and unique vegetation. At night we will
put up at the Quinched yacht club.
Day 4 (sailing)
Inside of an islanders live
From Quinched we will weigh anchor on board the "Atrapasueños"
sailing south. During the day we will explore small islands and learn
about villagers life and traditions in this beautiful archipelago. By
afternoon we will arrive to Quellón, the southern-most city of Chiloe
island. We will spend the night in a welcoming family inn.
Day 5 (sailing)
Searching the great blue whale…
This day we will weigh anchor very early, to cross the mythical "Golfo
Corcocado" (Humped Gulf) to the Guaitecas's archipelago. With luck
with us, we will sail next to the giant of the seas, the great Blue
Whale, arriving in the afternoon at the village on Melinka Island. We
will walk through the town an make an easy climb to view the panorama
of a striking landscape of islands, channels, and the Corcovado gulf
behind us. In this village, we will have dinner and rest for the next
day’s sail.
Day 6 (sailing)
Feeling the wild and solitary Patagonia
We will leave Melinka early in the morning to sail areas completely
uninhabited with a landscape whose stateliness can only be appreciated
when there. Sailing among channels and islands of great height whose
vegetation come just to the waterside, we will arrive in the afternoon
at Melchor Island where we will anchor to enjoy our first dinner on
board. Time to sleep deeply on board surrounded by silence.
Day 7 (sailing)
A port in a route and thermal waters to enjoy …
At approximately mid-day we will arrive at "Puerto Aguirre",
a small town of fishermen amidst an immense solitude. The island children
welcome visitors as they sail into port. This town has been a good supply
point for decades to sailors. This it is last point where will find
some moderns service such as telephone. After exploring this small town,
we will go for a magnificent swim in thermal waters, have dinner and
relax.
Day 8 (sailing)
Feeling the nearest of the snowdrifts…
After a dawn swim in the thermal waters, we will weigh anchor for our
final destination a 2 day sail to the San Rafael Lagoon. The landscape
during the trip will be startling, with channels between hills that
have lateral walls more than 3500 feet high. The contrast between the
blue of the water, the green of the hills, the blue of the sky and the
snowdrifts on the mountains are impressive. Finally we will find a peaceful
place to spend the night close to the Elephants Gulf, the entrance to
the lagoon San Rafael. We will anchor not more than 20 meters from the
shore with the trees over our heads.
Day 9 (sailing)
The emotion of arriving to the glacier…
We will sail into San Rafael Lagoon by the San Rafael glacier and then
into the Golfo Elefantes, where the first floe, small pieces of ice,
will appear in the water. We will navigate through the floe on a river
signalled only with buoys in the middle of a great area of water. Outside
the river and the buoys, there are up to 10 inches in some cases. Pieces
of beached ice will be seen. As we sail Rio Tempanos (River Floes),
the small floes will become larger and larger icebergs… Finally , we
will enter the lagoon, amongst icebergs that will make our yacht seem
small. We will sail to the other end of the lagoon to see an imposing
glacier more than 300 feet high. As we will sail closer to the iceberg
the water will seem more like a great piece of ice. We will share a
traditional Chilean liquor cooled with ice that can easily be15.000
years old… a traditional privilege to "taste" history. In
the afternoon we anchor in a small bay surrounded by ice to spend the
most incredible night the trip.
Day 10 (sailing, by earth, and air)
When the nature remembers us how little we are…
Early in the morning after a delicious breakfast on board, we will land
to take a 3 hour walk on the main circuit of the National Park San Rafael
Lagoon. On the walk, we will come to know the vegetation and feel the
evolution of time as we climb along the path. We will see the colonization
of vegetation species taking place on the rocks while the glacier moves
away from us. This incredible path ends with a panoramic view looking
down on the glacier.
We will return with the sensation of being very small compared with
the power and stateliness of the nature that surrounds us. We will leave
the lagoon to board the airplane that will carry us to Balmaceda airport.
As we fly over the San Rafael Glacier (one of the 4 biggest fresh water
glaciers of the planet), we will see a small part of the immense ice
field.
After the one hour flight, we will arrive in Balmaceda not only with
memories but with the sensation that this trip has changed something
our lives. . . an experience that will evolve in your future years.
